Andrew Myland A word from the Chairman
A warm welcome to Arnall Drive to the players, spectators, and management team of today’s visitors.
This I think will be the first ever time that Henbury & Rockleaze (or Rockleaze Rangers and Henbury under our previous guises) will have played Chalford and this afternoon apart we wish them a long and happy stay in the Gloucestershire County Football League. Despite the result it was fantastic to see such a healthy crowd at Friday night’s match at home to Almondsbury, lets hope we can get a few results to ensure they comeback and watch us again.
If you can help with sponsoring a match, player, or pitch side advertising board, or would just like to help and get involved with the running of the club please speak to myself or to another committee member who will be pleased to speak to you about any potential involvement.
Finally, please remember ‘we win together, we lose together but most importantly we stick together’. .

League Round Up Article by Mark Simpson
Starting with a midweek round-up in the league, Sharpness and Ruardean Hill Rangers fought out a 0-0 draw at Hamfields and Sharpness were generally on top and Bennett’s “goal” just before half time was ruled out for offside and right at the end Sharks skipper Frankham came within a whisker of taking all three points his thunderous drive striking the base of Underwood’s post.
In the second Ron Holpin Trophy match Stoke Gifford SGS United hosted Hanham Athletic at SGS and a convincing first to half performance saw SGS 3-0 to the good, in the end it was 4-0 but a much better second half saw a vastly improved Hanham giving Oli Gargett in the SGS goal a lot more work to do. Abrahams (2), Alexander and Cooper with the SGS goals.
On Friday evening in front of 167 spectators Henbury and Rockleaze entertained Almondsbury at Arnall Drive for an evenly contested affair with all the goals coming right at the end. H&R should have had the lead on 19 minutes with Jordan Dent went through on goal but his weak effort was easily saved by Burgess. On 27 Almonds Nathan Brown had a spectacular 25 yarder saved by Jordan Dunning. Five minutes before the break Burgess saved superbly from Dent. Right on half-time Danny Webb was through on goal but Burgess, again, made a decent save with his legs. On 55 minutes Nick Jones free kick for H&R was narrowly wide after a deflection off the Almonds wall and on 62 Liam Nicholls should have broken the deadlock for Almonds when through on Dunning’s goal but only managed to scuff his shot wide. The visitors took the lead on 87 minutes when the ball fell to Craig Lancastle who effortlessly stroked the ball past Dunning from six yards out. On 93 it was two when the ball appeared to ricochet off Zach Morgan and over a diving Dunning. H&R deservedly pulled one back on 96 minutes forcing the ball home from a corner and Almondsbury deservedly took three points, from a 2-1 win. |

League Round Up Article continued
After Wednesday’s Ron Holpin Trophy win it was a different story at Pen Park where Stoke Gifford SGS United were the visitors to Filton Athletic. It was a fairly end to end match with the first chance to Filton as the lively Trey Merrett latched on to a ball over the top. Filton had a few more chances with Kieran Cooper’s 11th minute shot dealt with by Oli Gargett. Gifford had their chances with Spike Weaver just over and keeper Barry Phillips dealing comfortably with a cross. On 23 minutes a ball over the top from Cooper and Merrett’s great finish made it 1-0. Gifford had afew chances which came to nothing and Gargett stopped Matthews shot just before the break. Just in to the second half Merrett had a shot over the top and the Gifford pushed for the equaliser but the Filton defence held strong, they had a cross off the post and a close header. But, in time added on Abel Abduraham won the ball high up the pitch and fed to Said Hassan who neatly finished for 2-0 and the three points for Filton Athletic.
After two draws Sharpness visited Oldbury Lane, Wick and a lively start with Sharpness just wide with keeper Wilson rooted. The game settled with flowing football with Wick just edging things and the Sharks dangerous on the break. This proved so when Sharpness broke quickly down the right and the cross found Alfie Jones unmarked to flick the ball past Wilson to open the scoring. Wick responded when Bailey Rudge weaved his way into the box but his cross went unconverted. Minutes later a great shot from Fred Taylor-Fox found the bottom corner of the Sharpness net for 1-1. In first half time added on Wick gave away an unnecessary free kick on the edge and a poorly aligned wall allowed Will Tainton to stroke his kick into the Wick net. Two minutes into the second half Cory Langdon broke into the Sharpness box and was upended for a penalty which Langdon struck well but was at a good height for Phillips to save. Sharpness then broke quickly |

down the right and centre half Liam Robson’s attempted clearance went goalward and James Tainton finished it off for 3-1. Five minutes later it was James Tainton again whose shot from outside the box beat Wilson for four – one. Liam Robson picked up his second yellow with minutes to go but Wick’s Jay Rudge smashed a shot in to pull one back and from the re-start the Sharks broke away for Keiron Bennett to shoot past Wilson for a 5-2 win and a bad day at the office for Wick.
A bright start to the campaign for Gala Wilton at Fairmile Gardens against Cheltenham Civil Service. After a fairly even start it wax Gala in front on 20 minutes with a goal from Ben Sluman but the lead didn’t last long with an own goal bringing Service on level terms. However, Gala re-gained the lead on 35 when a Jamie Creed free kick beat Jon Dix in the Service goal. The second half was a fairly mundane affair with neither side able to make a breakthrough leaving Gala with the three points and joint top of the league. Chalford played their first County League match At Bristol Barbarians RFC , home of fellow newcomers Totterdown United, and it was Chalford who started brightly and dominated the opening exchanges. The first goal came for Chalford after ten minutes when a Jamie Lock cross was met at the back post for Jon Davis to score Chalford’s first ever County League goal. They continued to press and had a penalty when Andy Maryon was brought down after a smart turn, however, Ben Minnican’s spot kick was tame and saved by keeper Ashley Martin, and Minnican nearly took out a passing plane with the rebound. Chalford eventually got their second when good build up found Minnican in space on the right and his cross was dinked over Bush by James Keylock for 2-0. Although Totterdown looked threatening on the counter there was nothing substantial to threaten Chalford keeper Duane Portlock. Totterdown came possession and creating chances but Chalford kept them at bay, and indeed, this left spaces for the Chalford counter and;

Maryon headed the third on 55 minutes from Keylock’s cross essentially sealing the win. Totterdown sub Josh Hemmings created a few chances and maybe could have had a goal and up at the other end Martin made some great saves to keep the score at three. Brunsdon did have one for Chalford ruled out for offside but an excellent first County League match for Chalford and a deserved 3-0 win
After a somewhat difficult start Broadwell Amateurs entertained Quedgeley Wanderers at The Hawthorns. On a perfect day for football Quedgeley started on the front foot and gained a free kick just two minutes in and Connor Webb’s effort narrowly missed the target. Despite Quedgeley’s early pressure it was Broadwell who struck first with Jamie Belfitt making an impressive run down the left and crossing for Nathan Davies whose initial attempt went awry only for Harry Williams to cooly slot in for a seventh minute lead. The game developed into an end-to-end affair with both sides creating chances and Harry Furniss was a constant threat for Quedgeley down the right. However, Broadwell doubled their lead on twenty minutes when Ethan Wilkins found Davies inside the box and he made no mistake this time. Quedgeley responded with urgency but they were repeatedly denied by solid defending and impressive goalkeeping by Jack Watkins. Quedgeley emerged for the second half with continued vigour and took control of the early stages and their persistence paid off in the 54th minute when Broadwell gifted the ball to Finlay Jenner who slotted past Watkins. Both sides made several substitutions to attempt to shift the momentum with Quedgeley still pushing and Broadwell trying to maintain possession. Several stoppages led to ten minutes of added time during which a long ball into Quedgeley’s area led to an unusual handling error by Nathan Charnock allowing Jamie Belfitt to tap in and seal a valuable 3-1 win for Broadwell

WHERE else in the world do players in the ninth and tenth tiers get the chance to play at the country’s national stadium?
That’s actually a genuine question as I’d be intrigued to know but the FA Vase has always felt totally unique.
This weekend the long road to Wembley begins for clubs in both the Isuzu FA Vase and Non-League’s other premier cup competition, the Isuzu FA Trophy.
The Vase has always had a place in my Non-League heart. I’ve never seen my team win it, but it was the first ever trip to Wembley – a 4-4 thriller between Guiseley and Gresley Rovers back in 1991.
Those were the days of finals going to replays and Guiseley eventually ran out winners at Bramall Lane.
But that was the first taste of the competition and since then I’ve been lucky to see finals won by Diss Town, Tiverton Town (twice) the years away from Wembley where AFC Sudbury were unfortunate to be beaten three years in a row by Brigg Town, Winchester City and Didcot Town, before much later joining The NLP to cover it as a ‘job’.
From Whitley Bay’s all-conquering side as part of the Northern League’s dominant years to Romford lifting the 50th edition last season, it’s a competition that throws up wonderful stories every year.
If you haven’t checked out Phil Annets’ @favasefactfile page on X – formerly Twitter – then I highly recommend you do. It’s packed with stats and facts about the famous competition first won in 1975 by Hoddesdon Town.

Continued In total 595 teams will enter the competition this year. By the end of the first round qualifying, 187 will be one step closer. Only eight more rounds to go before the final in May!
Thanks to Phil’s stats we know there are 51 Step 6 clubs guaranteed of progression with 44 all Step 5 ties. There are 92 ties with the chance of an upset. The competition shows the vast depth of football in this country. Just think how many players will be representing their club in the Vase this weekend, with more to join as the early rounds continue.
Ultimately, in nine months’ time, two sides will battle it out on the hallowed turf at Wembley. Now that is special.
