A warm welcome to Arnall Drive to the players, spectators, and management team of this afternoon’s visitors.

Last Saturday was another sobering day for the County League side with the lads well beaten by a dominant Sharpness side, the team have spent the week having a bit of a reset and we look forward to returning to the form of last season. This afternoon also sees our remaining 4 Saturday teams begin their respective seasons so it’s good luck to all of them and we hope some of them will emerge with some silverware at the end of the season.

If you can help with sponsoring a match, player, or pitch side advertising board, or would just like to help and get involved with the running of the club please speak to myself or to another committee member who will be pleased to speak to you about any potential involvement.

Finally, please remember ‘we win together, we lose together but most importantly we stick together’.

A warm welcome back to the Drive to the players, management and spectators of Chalford FC, this time for the first round of the Les James League Cup.

The league game was a tightly contested affair a couple of weeks ago, ultimately finishing 1-1, though both sides may feel they could have done more to snatch the win.  Since then, fortunes of both clubs could not be more different, with Chalford having beaten Quedgeley 4-0, whilst we were on the wrong end of a dreadful performance (1-4) against Sharpness.

Despite continuing challenges with injuries and availability, I was really disappointed with the showing of the lads last time out, with Sharpness having outperformed us in all departments.  The lack of intensity and poor work-rate is totally at odds with the standards that this group have set, so I am sure they will be looking to put that right this week.  Following strong words after the match, the players have been challenged to respond with an honest, grafting performance this week, though the signs at training were very positive that this lesson has been heard and understood.

Despite the loss, it was great to see Cam Tarr get through his first 90 minutes after a lengthy spell out with a series of injuries incurred last season, and also Tasman Rook who made his return from a hamstring injury to play the last 20-minutes.
7
p8

This week sees the return of Sam
Bailey after missing the last two games with a calf strain, though it is still likely to be a week or two too early for both Adam Parkes and Jenson Beard who remain sidelined with back and ankle injuries respectively.  Sam will make a massive difference to the balance of the midfield, as he is always so calm and composed in possession, which we've perhaps lacked in the last couple of games.

Elsewhere, Matt Harrison and Fraser Butt continue to recover from their respective knee injuries, with both expected to be out for a number of weeks yet. After an indifferent start to the league campaign, hopefully the cup will provide a welcome distraction this week.

Hope you all enjoy today's fixture.

JORDAN DUNNING –GOALKEEPER

No.1 ‘keeper, Jordan had a sensational 2023-24 season with 8 clean sheets and a number of top performances which contributed to making the team so hard to beat Jordan dominates his area and makes collecting balls into the box look effortless. His massive kicks have also been known to catch a few teams out

HARRY TRETT – GOALKEEPER

Former Newport County stopper, Trett brings a commanding presence to the side, blending pin-point distribution with excellent shot-stopping

TASMAN ROOK – FULL BACK

Tas joined the club in the second half of the 2022/23 season from Chippenham Town, but a series of injuries has limited his appearances to date. A very gifted player, Tas reads the game situation very well and has proven to be adaptable in a number of shapes. If he can stay fit, one to watch for the future

PETER IRELAND – FULL BACK Nicest lad in the club, Pete nonetheless puts it all in on the pitch and is a true competitor. Not the most prolific in front of goal, Pete has nonetheless scored his annual goal (a sublime chip) early this season, which will take the pressure off.
9
p10

BLERAN THAQI

FULL or / CENTRE BACK After a breakthrough season, former Henbury U18s player Bleran has starred throughout preseason with a number of mature performances. Strong both defensively and in possession, Bleran has excellent potential and will be one to watch for the future

JORDAN BUCKETT (CAPT) – CENTRE BACK A natural leader on and off the pitch, Jordan has matured well into the captaincy, leading by example through consistently putting in strong performances.

GEORGE JAMES – CENTRE BACK George alternates between centre back and centre forward, both positions he has become adept at. Despite a questionable decision to don white boots this season, George has good feet, excellent vision and passing range, making him a real asset to the side

OLIVER WOOLLAND – CENTRE BACK Ollie currently holds the record of ‘most spells with the Club’ jointly with Jay Moore. A versatile player, former Southampton academy player, Ollie can play anywhere along the back or in midfield

10
p11

ADAM PARKES –

CENTRE BACK

Adam is another strong centre back who has proven during preseason to be equally strong in the air and with the ball at his feet. Adam likes to drive with the ball and maraud forwards. He can also bring a Delap style throw as his party trick.

CAMERON TARR – CENTRE BACK

Back after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury, Cam is a great addition to the side, bringing a wealth of experience. A strong, physical presence at back, Cam is excellent in the air and a handful for opposition forwards.

MARCUS WILLIAMS (VICE CAPT) – MIDFIELD Club stalwart, after starting at Under 6’s with Rockleaze Marcus is equally adept at fullback or midfield. A tenacious player, Marcus is a nightmare to play against, winning a lot of ball, and whose low centre of gravity makes him very hard to dispossess.

DREW SAWDON – MIDFIELD

Hard hitting midfielder hailing from the North, 2023-24 Player’s Player of the Season, Drew enjoyed an outstanding first season in the 1sts, ending up as joint top goal scorer (16) as well as being a dominating presence in the midfield.

11
p12

SAMUEL BAILEY –

MIDFIELD

Silent assassin, bandit-Bailey is a classy midfielder who both links up play and scores goals through his late runs into the box.

BRANDON BOONTAM – MIDFIELD

When you’re that good, you can afford to be a little bit lazy… Bran is an outstanding player, who from time-to-time gets his freekicks on target. Excellent close control and strength had made Brandon one of the first names on the teamsheet

MATTHEW HARRISON – MIDFIELD

Matt is a classy player (like a fine wine) who brings both calmness and an engine to the midfield. Great positional awareness means that Matt rarely needs to sprint, which is just as well

JONATHAN WEBB – MIDFIELD

Jon is your typical box to box midfielder – strong in the tackle, good feet, and likes to drive with the ball. Standing tall at 6’3”Jon is an aerial threat too. Jon has a fierce shot on him too.

12
p13

KACPER KALKOWSKI –

WINGER

Kacper is incredibly talented – a tricky winger who has great feet and an eye for goal. He has excellent set piece delivery, bagging a number of assists last season.

NICHOLAS JONES – WINGER

Former Cribbs winger, Nick brings pace, experience and a winning mentality to the side. Nick loves to get forwards with his mazy runs, but is equally adept defensively, making him a real asset on the left.

FRASER BUTT – WINGER

Former Gloucester City academy player, Fraser is a mercurial talent with an eye for goal, as well as being a set piece specialist. Able to play practically any position, Fraser is incredibly versatile. Not the keenest trainer, Fraser nonetheless does it where it counts on the pitch.

v

TATE SHAW – WINGER

He might be built like p!@#, but Tate brings extreme pace to the side, and is an excellent finisher, as demonstrated by his well taken goals in preseason games against Cribbs and Bitton

13
p14

DANIEL WEBB –

FORWARD Tour and social secretary, Webby is also a Gloucestershire County League veteran, having terrorised opposition with his skill, movement and goals for a number of years. Joint top goal scorer (16) last season, whilst chipping in with a number of assists, Webby will be looking to add to his tally this year

JAMES GOULDEN – FORWARD

Sporting a suspect tache and frosted tips, when not taking long coach trips across Portugal, James is a tall and tricky forward. Backed with a great touch and good off the ball movement, James is an exciting talent and one to watch for the future.

JENSON BEARD – FORWARD

Jenson is swiftly becoming the complete striker. Bringing pace, physicality, work-rate, as well as guile, Jenson finished the 2023-24 season as joint top goal scorer (16). An exciting prospect, we hope to see Jenson continue on this trajectory

JORDAN DENT – FORWARD

Despite a string of injuries over the last few seasons, “Barry” Dent is nonetheless a quality forward with an eye for goal. Narrowly missing out on the Club golden boot last season, despite only returning to fitness for the second half of the season, Jordan will look to continue this form into the 2024-25 season. Jordan is a liability on a night out though.

14
p15

PETER BRADBURY – MANAGER

Long serving manager, into his 14th season having managed the Club’s Reserves, A team and B team previously. Now into a 7th season with the 1st team, Bradders is looking to attain promotion for the Club after last season’s 3rd placed finish.

LEE DOUGLAS – ASSISTANT MANAGER Long suffering assistant manager to Bradders, Lee has been signed up for another season. Lee is a generous man who is well loved and respected by everyone in the Club. Known to be quite loud, from time to time, avoid standing directly in his path

JASON TARR – ASSISTANT MANAGER New addition to the management team for the 2024-25 season, Jason is an excellent coach, but also a calm head with a wealth of experience on matchday

MATT DYER – ASSISTANT MANAGER Matt rejoins the Club after a spell as video analyst for Cribbs and hopes to bring his expertise to Henbury & Rockleaze

Duane Portlock - GK

New signing this season, vastly experienced keeper having played for Brimscombe, Shortwood & Taveners. Great presence with big voice & great distribution.

Founded in 1891 Chalford joined the Mid-Glos League in 1894 playing their games at the Pleasure Ground whilst changing in the YMCA hut. As with many clubs during this time membership of more than one league was normal and in 1898 they also joined the newly formed Dursley & District League, winning the league in 1900-0 I. 1902 saw the formation of the Stroud & District League with again Chalford being founder members.

In 1922 the club were founding members of the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League and in fact took part in the first ever league game when the club visited Broadwell. Despite taking a 2-0 lead they eventually lost 3-2. The club continued membership for 5 seasons but withdrew due to financial reasons and entered the newly formed Stroud Premier Division. In 1931 they rejoined the GNSL retaining membership until the outbreak of WWII. By this time the club was now playing at the Sycamores using the local Mechanics Pub as their changing quarters.

After the war they immediately rejoined the GNSL and in 1953 with the formation of two Divisions they found themselves in Division One. In the mid 50s plans were well afoot to have a permanent home at Highfield and on 31st August 1957 the first game was played on the new ground with Chalford beating Bream 6-1. This game was actually a Division 2 fixture with the club having been relegated the season before. By strange coincidence the club finished Runners-Up in 1958-59 behind Bream regaining their Division One status. By 1962-63 they were back in Division 2. In 1975-76 they finished Runners-Up in Division 2 behind local rivals Forest Green Rovers Reserves. 1977-78

  25
p26

saw the zenith of the clubs success with the lifting of the GNSL Championship. The title race went down to the wire with Championship rivals Lydney Town the visitors to Highfield on the last game of the season. In front of a large crowd Lydney had a goal disallowed and then a penalty saved before goals from Paul Tester and Nick Rock (penalty) secured a 2-0 win and that first Championship win. Sadly the club were relegated back to Division 2 in 1981-82 and even worse followed with their relegation from the league in 1987.

After 15 seasons in the doldrums the club finally regained their GNSL membership in 2002 immediately gaining promotion after finishing third behind Warden Hull United and Whitecroft. Relegation in 2006 saw them flounder in Division 2 for 11 seasons before winning the Division in 2016-17. After finishing Runners Up to Sharpness in 2018-19 the club is now hoping to emulate the 1977-78 season and lift the title again.

Last season saw the club once again finish runners-up in Division One but this time finishing 7 points behind Cheltenham Civil Service. They did however lift the Reg Davis Trophy for the 2nd time running by beating the eventual league champions 4-3 in an exhilarating final at Lydney that went right to the wire. The club are therefore keen to make league history by being the first club to achieve a hat-trick of wins.

Almondsbury maintained their perfect start to the season with a late win at Broadwell Amateurs. Sharpness and Chalford also continued their unbeaten starts to the season with good wins on the road at Henbury & Rockleaze and Quedgeley Wanderers respectively. At the other end of the table Wick picked up their first win with a fine second half display as Cory Landon netted four in a 5-2 win at Totterdown United who are taking time to adjust to the higher level.

On a pleasant Saturday afternoon at The Hawthorns, Broadwell Amateurs faced off against an Almondsbury side with a 100% record. The game began with both sides exchanging possession and chances in a frantic opening half. Broadwell had the first real opportunity in the 9th minute after a promising move down the right, but the shot blazed over the bar, much to the frustration of the home supporters. Almondsbury suffered a setback just 21 minutes in when Danny Lane was forced off due to an injury, disrupting their rhythm. The home side continued to press, and in the 28th minute, another chance fell their way. Connor Smith delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, finding Ethan Wilkins in space, but he could only direct his effort wide of the post. Remarkably, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested for much of the half. The most notable moment came in the 42nd minute when a through ball set Jamie Belfitt free, with only the goalkeeper to beat. As he bore down on goal, Belfitt was hauled down by the last defender on the edge of the box. The referee awarded a free kick but chose not to issue a card, a decision that left the Broadwell bench and fans incensed. The resulting free kick came to nothing, and the teams went into the break level at 0-0.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. The game was largely confined to midfield battles, with neither side

27
p28

making significant inroads into the opposition's half. It wasn't until the 71st minute that Broadwell registered their first shot on goal. A cross from the right found Ethan Wilkins, who attempted a volley, but once again, the shot flew harmlessly over the bar, much to the dismay of the home crowd. Just as the match seemed destined to end in a goalless draw, Almondsbury struck in the 86th minute. Matt Harmer latched onto a cross that somehow eluded everyone and struck a fierce shot that nestled into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. It was a cruel blow for Broadwell, who had battled hard throughout the match. The final minutes saw Broadwell desperately searching for an equalizer, but despite their efforts, they couldn't find a way past the resolute Almondsbury defense. The visitors held on to secure a hard-fought victory. Broadwell will be disappointed to have come away with nothing after a match in which they created enough chances to get something from the game. Almondsbury, on the other hand, will be pleased with their resilience and ability to capitalize on their one clear opportunity which keeps them at the top of the League.

Chalford made a rapid start at Quedgeley Wanderers, where a chance created straight from the kick off was not cleared effectively and so was slotted home by Andrew Maryon on 20 seconds. On 12 minutes a ball down the left, beat the Quedgeley Right Back and was squared for a tap in by Andy Roberts. There were further chances for both sides with Harry Furniss looking lively for the home side, and Jack Bright making a diving header to clear a dangerous cross from Chalford. On 41 minutes a Lawson cross fell to Diwash Kerung but was headed straight at Sam Neale in the Chalford goal. Then on 42 a mistake in the Quedgeley defence allowed the ball to be played to Ryan Harry to tap in Chalfords third.

Chalford dominated the opening exchanges in the second half with Quedgeley keeper Nathan Charnock denying George Parker early and Dean Turner firing just over. Alfie Pledger forced Chalford’s Sam Neale into a save when a superbly struck ball from just inside the Chalford half was heading for the top corner. Chalford continued to have the better of the game and on 80 minutes completed their 4-0 victory when a ball over the top, was met by Luke Brunsdon who beats Pledger and nutmegs Charnock into the bottom corner. I the dying minutes Chalford struck the post, and a Pledger free kick was touched onto the bar by Neale to deny Quedgeley a consolation

Henbury & Rockleazes continue their poor start to the season with a disjointed performance at home to a dominant Sharpness side. Henbury & Rockleaze should have scored early on when they broke down the right-hand side, but Kacper Kalkowski passed rather than taking a shot and Nick Jones effort was saved by a back tracking defender, Sharpness broke away down their right Mears cross struck the crossbar with the defence scrambling leaving man of the match Liam Harper to fire home form 3 yards out. On 14 minutes Dan Webb cut in from the left and his fine effort was inches wide from curling in. on 26 minutes Kieran Bennett pulled the ball back from the right bye line leaving Harper with another tap in to make it 2-0. On 28 minutes Cam Tarr made a wonderful save down to his right saving from a Harper downward header and just before the break on 45 minutes Bennett struck the post from 15 yards out with Tarr beaten.

The second half started in much the same vein and on 54 minutes Archie Mears raced clear of the defence and in a one-on-one situation with Tarr struck the ball well to make it 3-0.Substitute Jordan Dent reduced the arrears on 65 minutes with a left foot drive form 25 yards out which nested in the corner of the net, however, within a minute Harper had his deserved

hattrick with a rasping freekick from 20 yards out. The remainder of the game petered out with Sharpness in control but without needing to do much more to take the points

Frampton United welcomed Gala Wilton to the Bell Field for their first home game of the season. After a pretty even 30 minutes Frampton opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Ellis Danes-Rutherford headed in a from a Josh Browning cross, 5 minutes later it was 2-0 when Archie Myatt beat a defender on the edge of the box and fired the ball into the bottom corner. On the stroke of half time a good through ball by Charlie Nash found Myatt who scored his 2nd goal of the game. Frampton finished the scoring in the 76th minute with a 2nd by Danes-Rutherford, Gala almost got a consolation goal in the 88th minute from a long range strike from Ryley Mace but Tom Kaye did well to push the ball around the post.

Totterdown United hosted Wick at Bristol Barbarians RFC with both teams looking for their first win of the season. Totterdown started the game the brighter of the two and took advantage of the good start to score a good team goal finished off by Aaron Thorne on the 10 minute mark. Wick grew into the game and put Totterdown under some pressure for the remainder of the half but some good defending, excellent goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the score at 1-0 going into half time.

Wick started the second half with real conviction and put Totterdown under a lot of pressure. Totterdown held on until the 60th minute when Cory Langdon was played over the Top and calmly slotted home a 1 on 1 into the Totterdown net. The floodgates open and Wick scored a quick fire 4 goals from another 3 from Cory Langdon and one from Liam McCracken put the game to bed. Totterdown finished the game with a consolation goal from Dan Harrison. Final score 5-2 to Wick who were deserved winners on the day.

Stoke Gifford SGS United hosted Ruardean Hill Rangers and the game started very quickly as Gifford broke away from the Kick Off an went straight through the Ruardean defence to create a one on one with the Ruardean keeper Aaron Underwood who was able to tip the ball over for a corner. The corner was quickly taken and cleared to Ruardeans’ Alex Stephens who bulldozed his way through the home defence to whip the ball across the box to Steve Clark who took a touch and drilled the ball past Oli Gargett to leave the visitors 1 up inside a minute. The hosts gradually worked their way back into the game against a very well drilled Ruardean side who always had a threat to their play. Before half time Sam Garrod was able to get on the end of a cross and head Gifford level at the break. Stoke Gifford started the second half with a bit more purpose with Mike Barry and Cosmo Browne always looking to create an opportunity. But they were unable to break down a resolute Ruardean defence until later in the half when a cross field ball found captain Rudy Hill free on the right side of the box and he slammed the ball home. Ruardean thought they had equalised but from a defence splitting ball their strikers had strayed offside. Late on substitute Arian Askari won and converted a penalty to leave the result 3-1 to Stoke Gifford SGS United.

DORKING WANDERERS owner Marc White took to the club’s official twitter account on Monday afternoon following the FA Cup second round qualifying draw.

“Good luck to Horsham in the third qualifying round,” joked the colourful Wands boss, who has taken the club from park football to the top of the Non-League Pyramid.

Since first entering the competition in 2013, Dorking are yet to reach the first round proper.

For the last two seasons – because of their then Step 1 status – White’s side had a bye until the fourth round qualifying stage.

Last year, with just one win required to reach the first round, they were drawn away to…you guessed it, Horsham. The Step 3 Hornets beat them 2-0 and went on to earn a famous 3-3 draw against Barnsley and a televised replay.

They were then reinstated after their League One opponents were found to have played an ineligible player and had a second bite of the cherry against Sutton United.

So White, with his trademark humour, is expecting the worst for his side when they meet next weekend with the National League North and South clubs now entering the competition.

At the time of writing there are still some replays to be sorted but the latest draw has thrown up some intriguing games.

The first round is still three ties away but, over the coming weeks, eyes will widen as it gets nearer. For many clubs, even getting to this stage feels like making it.

How about Newcastle Town drawing former EFL side Scunthorpe United?

The National League North leaders only dropped two points in their first six games, but they haven’t won an FA Cup tie since 2018.

Newcastle, 15th in NPL West, beat Long Eaton United last Saturday. They’ve not reached the third qualifying round since 2010.

Nails & Tickenham hosting Chippenham Town is another tie that stands out.

It’s only Nailsea’s second season in the competition, and they’ve landed a plum draw against a side three divisions above them. Having beaten Cinderford Town, Reading City and Hartpury University, they won’t roll over against the Bluebirds.

West Didsbury & Chorlton welcoming Darlington catches the eye too, as does Shifnal Town hosting Redditch United, while Wessex League AFC Stoneham take on Step 2 Salisbury.

Talking of good cup runs, Maidstone United’s run to the last 16 was the FA Cup story of last season. That adventure began at Steyning Town Community. This time it starts against fellow National League South Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Who will make it through to the third round qualifying? Other than Horsham, of course!
